Dear CYC Supporter,
Happy Spring! As we look forward to the 52nd sailing season of the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club, there is much anticipation and excitement after a grueling Winter in the Northeast. To make it all happen, we really need volunteers for Work Weekend on June 14th and 15th (see below for details).

I recently spent the entire vacation week of April 21st on the island and am happy to report that the new Laser floats made it safely to the island, thanks to Capt. Jono Billings who actually towed them over to the island at about 6 knots with the MV Cuttyhunk. Needless to say, it was a long day but these new floats are beautiful and should last for 20 plus years. Seth Garfield was thankfully available to tow the floats down to the CYC basin where they will be installed in the coming weeks next to the main CYC pier. The addition of these new floats effectively means the end of an era: no more flipping floats, breaking backs, or getting cut by barnacles or squirted by unidentifiable sea creatures at the end of August!

Looking ahead to the Summer, we have a great group of sailing instructors, all with CYC experience. Ben Ross and Scott Zolkos are both returning as Co-Head Instructors and will be bolstered by veteran instructors Ellis Lehner, Lucy Garfield, and Beau Monast, a familiar face at the CYC. Again this year, we expect several A Groupers to help out as Junior Instructors at peak times, a continuation of a fine tradition and a great way for them to hone their teaching skills. I would also like to announce that at our August meeting the following CYC members were elected to the CYC Board of Governors: Emily Anderson, Cathy Broderick, Rud Mason, Will Monast, Grant Schenck. We look forward to their support and ideas in the cominig years!

The CYC will continue the very popular family friendly Wednesday afternoon race series which was a big success last year. Ben Walker, our new Inter-Club Racing Coordinator, is talking with a few Yacht Clubs of similar spirit about possible mini regattas again in July and August and we will keep you posted.

Lastly, our nine week season begins June 23rd and ends Friday August 22th. We are thankful that the Porter family has offered to host the July party on Saturday July 26th at 5:30 PM and the August party will be Saturday August 23th at 5 PM. There will be classes this year on Friday July 4th with C Group in the morning, followed by the parade, and then A Group in the afternoon.

See you all on the island, and thanks for your support!

Best Regards,
Angus L. Garfield

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS! THE CYC WORK WEEKEND IS JUNE 14-15th
Work Weekend 2007The CYC continues to be an all volunteer organization and could not survive without both the physical and financial support of the membership. NEW THIS YEAR: We will provide written proof of community service to any high school or college aged student who volunteers during Work Weekend. These letters can be a helpful addition to your activities resume! Interested students, please check in with Alison Granger when you arrive to volunteer.

Please make an effort to help us get the CYC ship shape for the Summer season. It is a lot of fun for everyone! We will serve lunch on Saturday at the Garfield house to all volunteers. Please show up at the Clubhouse at 8:30 AM on Saturday June 14th and at 9:00 AM Sunday June 15th. We should be done by noon on Sunday at the latest and maybe Saturday late PM with a good turnout and good weather. If you can make it, please contact Angus Garfield through Web site's "Contact Us"' page, or call 207-799-5298. There is a 7 PM Friday night MV Cuttyhunk Ferry and a 9 AM ferry Saturday morning, with return service on Sunday at 4 PM.
MEMBERSHIP AND CLASS REGISTRATION REMINDER
sunrise over the harborFrom David Frothingham, Treasurer:

CYC membership forms, student sailing registration forms, and the CYC waiver forms were mailed in early April 2008 to past members.

Please note that the CYC and our insurance company both require that all of your forms, including the waiver form, be signed and returned to us before participating in any CYC class or signing out of boats. This is a firm condition of member participation. We need all forms returned by June 1, 2008 at the latest. This deadline gives us the necessary time to publish the highly coveted CYC Membership Directory. Members who send in their dues after June 1rst will not be included in the directory for 2008. If you have questions about registration or need additional forms, please contact David Frothingham through Hal Granger on the Web site's "Contact Us" page with your name and full mailing address and he will gladly send these forms to you.

The CYC has a one week minimum signup for sailing classes
and class sizes are limited so please send in your forms as soon as possible. On-site registration is subject to availability and is not guaranteed.

The class schedule with remain the same as last year as follows:
2008 Daily Schedule

Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri
9:00-11:00 B C C B C
1:00-4:00 A B * A A

*Wednesday afternoon is Adult/Family racing (2:00 PM Skippers Meeting).
Note: There WILL BE classes on July 4th.

A reminder to all award winners from last year to please have your name engraved on your trophy and return it to the CYC clubhouse by July 15th at the latest.

When dropping off and picking up your children, and in effort to reduce classroom noise, please park on the roadside closer to the dock and away from the clubhouse until the instructors have finished the lesson. Lastly, all sailors must wear a life preserver at all times on CYC docks, floats, and boats.

TO REPEAT, THE CYC DIRECTORY WILL BE CLOSED JUNE 1st! PLEASE DON'T BE A FENCE SITTER!
ImageIt is worth repeating that the CYC Membership Directory is THE information bible on Cuttyhunk and I know that all of you want to be listed. To ensure that your name is listed, we need your paid membership form, signed waiver, and pre-registration forms (if applicable) no later than June 1st. In years past, we have made last minute phone calls to procrastinating members who have not sent in their dues by the deadline but we will not be doing this in 2008 as this process is time consuming and inevitably causes a delay in the publication. Stephen Garfield, our publisher, wants to have the 2008 CYC directories available for distribution by the 4th of July weekend, so please send in your forms. Thank you!

If you need more forms sent to you, please email David Frothingham through Hal Granger on the Web site's "Contact Us" page with your name and address and he will send you the forms.

EVER WONDER WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE THE COMMODORE OF THE WEEK? GIVE IT A TRY!
ImageThe CYC Commodore of the Week program helps to assure the smooth sailing of the program throughout the season by providing adult support and supervision to the instructors during sailing program hours. We hope you will consider volunteering to be Commodore of the Week for one week during season. For a complete description of the Commodore of the Week duties and/or to sign up, please email Alison Granger through Hal Granger on the Web site's "Contact Us" page.

CYC MEMBER NEWS & CLASSIFIEDS
Here is news from our membership.

From Marla Garfield:
FOR RENT: We'll be renting the "Gutter" this Summer (adjacent to Bowling Alley) . Sleeps 4, well-equipped, fabulous views. One week minimum, no pets. Please contact Marla through Hal Granger on the Web site's "Contact Us" page or 502.458.4853.

From Peter Mollo-Christensen:
FOR RENT: The Mollo-Christensen house will be available for two or three weeks in July. The main house has two large bedrooms, a bunkroom (and a few other sleeping possibilities), 2 baths, washer/dryer. The attached cottage has a bedroom, livingroom, bath and it's own kitchen. We are fairly flexible on dates, and would prefer to rent to someone familiar with island life, especially since it's way out in the suburbs (the "Neck").

From New Member David Thurston:
Thurston house on the "Neck" available for rent July 12-19 and August 23-30. Please contact David Thurston
at 617-888-9509.

From Daisy Pattison:
I will be on Cuttyhunk from the July 11th-27th. As always, I cannot wait. Nina Garfield has rented the Mandell's place for the month so I expect to broaden my visits before and after my time at Low's. The twins will be coming the first week of July and we all want to see them while they are here.

As for the CYC news..We all had a good Winter. The boys snowboarded as much as possible while visiting Nina Garfield in N.H. We celebrated the New Year with her and Greg and Sam Charlton and my boys with good food and champagne! Johnny graduated from New England Institute of Technology with an AD in Science(Marine Technology). Robbie is enjoying track and Otto is going to play baseball again but he cannot wait to start up at CYC! They all have been having fun catching trout this Spring.

From Ned and Bev Prevost
You might guess, our big news since we last saw everyone at Cuttyhunk is Marnie and Matt's wedding of January 19, 2008 in NYC at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine where Marnie works as a museum educator! Marnie is now Marnie Prevost Weir as in Mr & Mrs. Matthew C. Weir!

Elizabeth Prevost was Marnie's honor attendant (with other attendants: Matt's sister Meghan; Marnie's roommate of many years, Sue; and Winnetka friend Louise) and Elizabeth's husband Mike Guenther was an usher.

Ned, and Matt's father Dan Weir, were the officiants, both being Episcopal priests, along with two other priests: our old friend, Jim Kowalski (Dean of the Cathedral) and his wife Anne Brewer.

The reception was on the Cathedral grounds in a half-timbered hall called Synod Hall. Elizabeth and I got inspired that week before the wedding to write some wedding-appropriate lyrics to the tune of the CYC Song. Hopefully that was legal!! All the Cuttyhunkers in attendance joined in the singing! It was all wonderful and M&M then went off for a few fabulous days to St. John where they were able to say hi to Jeff and Gail Spear!!

Further family news: In February, Elizabeth had a brief but fascinating, "business" trip to India, representing Grinnell, along the lines of her trip last year to Cairo (after Ned was there!).

We are starting to anticipate Cuttyhunk (as we do all year long!) Hope all is well with everyone and we will see you SOON!
Bev

From Charles Hulley:
Hulley family news: Trish and Charlie just returned from Switzerland where a combined business/pleasure trip took them to Zurich and the Alps. After Vanessa's P.A. summer job in Hollywood, the film, a digi-videocalled "The Hills Are Alive" is up on the internet now. Genevieve is still volunteering with AIDS babies in South Boston (when she's not in classes). Thomas is a freshman and is playing on the HS golf team now.
Best regards, Charlie

From Donald Hurwitz:
Greetings to all our Cuttyhunk friends from the Hurwitz family. School news dominated our emptied nest this year: Jenna graduates from the University of Michigan (Phi Beta Kappa, no less) and plans to seek fame and fortune in NY or Boston by the Fall. Jesse survived his first year at Skidmore and looks forward to a Summer making music and learning about affordable housing development. And Rita completed her training at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, first begun when the kids were in grade school, and became a practicing analyst. As the world turns, Sun Up will be on the market soon: if you have friends or family you'd like to see on Cuttyhunk without having to put them up, invite them to visit www.cuttyhunk4sale.com. See you on island!
