The CYC announces third annual photo contest!
2010 Photo Contest Rules
General Rules
All photos must be digital and must be more-or-less CYC-related. Photos must be taken during the photo contest period, which begins on the first morning of Work Weekend and ends on the Saturday preceding the August Party.
Image Requirements
All images must be submitted in JPG -- also known as JPEG or .jpg -- format (the popular format), at high quality. Images must be original and unmodified; they must not be altered, edited, manipulated, etc. Color must be natural. Do not compress photos before submission (don't use Picasa or other photo sharing services, since they meaningfully degrade the image quality). Photos with poor image quality will not qualify.
Family eligibility
If this contest were run on the mainland, we would disqualify all CYC employees, directors/governors, officers, and volunteers, any family members, and any persons living in the same households, whether or not related. On Cuttyhunk, who would be left? We will try to be sensitive to all nepotism issues, especially when judging photos. At a minimum, judges will not be permitted to vote for their own photos or photos of immediate family members more than once.
No purchase necessary
We have no clue why contests include this.
Submission Guidelines
All photos that are submitted to the Web site will be automatically entered into the contest, so long as they adhere to the rules. Please keep a copy of your own photos, because submitted photos will not be returned. You may submit only photos you personally have taken. In submitting your photos to the CYC, whether for the contest or not, you are also granting the CYC a perpetual non-exclusive license to publish and otherwise use the photograph on the Web site, in the Newsletter, Directory, and otherwise as the CYC sees fit. (You retain the copyright to your photo, and you can do what you wish with your photo, but you grant the CYC non-exclusive use.) Please email photos to Hal Granger, whose email is published in the Directory or, if you don't have a Directory handy, please contact Hal via the "Contact Us" page to ask for his email address (email not published here to avoid spam).
Image Name Suggestions
If you feel up to it, please change the photo file's name to a format like "MyName20100704-1" or "ABC100704-2" (using your three initials), instead of the original name which might be "IMG_0001". Naming your photo will help to avoid your annoying sibling from accidentally winning because of misidentification of your stunning photo. This is not a requirement.
Photo Subject Restrictions
Photos must be deemed appropriate for the CYC Web site. Any CYC waiver relating to photographs shall be deemed to constitute approval of a CYC sailor appearing in a photo. However, if a sailor or his/her family objects by email before the end of voting, that photo entry will be disqualified.
Interactive Judging (fine print)
The judges shall cull the photos submitted to a reasonable number of finalists, and those photos shall be posted on the Web site (see link on home page). For 2010, judges will be (alphabetically by first name) Alison Granger, Elisa Tenenbaum, Kathryn Balistrieri, and Kirk and Sharon Phelps.
Voting
Voting will be online. When the voting is in progress, you will be prompted to enter your name, your email address, and your top photo choice. Voting is restricted to one vote per immediate CYC member family per contest (one vote in the July contest and one vote in the August contest). Voting will end at noon on the day of the August Party.
Prizes
In keeping with our two-year-long tradition, your Commodore has generously decided to award an embroidered CYC cap to the top two vote getters for the summer [formerly, the contest winner in both July and August]. More than the pride you will take in wearing your award cap, your photo will be posted on the Web site and you will be recognized as the photo contest winner! And, winners will be among those considered for the coveted cover photo on the 2011 Directory!
How to submit photos
By email. To submit photos by email, please email to Hal Granger's email address. If you don't have a CYC Directory handy, please contact him using this Web site's "Contact Us" page. He will provide his email. We do it this way to reduce spam.
By hand. To submit photos by hand, please put your photos on a data storage device such as a USB flash drive (aka memory stick or thumb drive) or CD and transfer them to Hal Granger in person. Alternatively, you can drop off a burned CD.
