Dear CYC Friends,
Springtime greetings! We are looking forward to another fun season of sailing at the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club. As a volunteer-managed organization, CYC could not survive without both the physical and financial support of the membership. To make it all happen, we need your help. The first opportunity for volunteers is during Work Weekend on June 18th and 20th (see below for details).
Thanks to those of you who have already joined CYC for 2011. If you have not already done so, please keep in mind that class space is available on a first-come/first-served basis, and that July classes often are full before the season starts. We are extending the window for reduced sailing class fees ($60 per week) until this Sunday, June 5th. Fees will reset to our standard $70 per week as of June 6th, and to $80 for sailing class registrations received after the season starts on June 27th. June 5th will also be the deadline for inclusion in this year's CYC Directory. We would love to include you in the Directory, and we greatly appreciate the support your membership represents.
Our eight-week 2010 season begins on Monday, June 27th and ends Friday August 19th. The class schedule will remain the same as last year and is as follows:
C Group: 9-11 AM, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday B Group: 9-11 AM, Monday and Thursday; 1-4 PM Tuesday A Group: 1- 4 PM, Monday, Thursday and Friday
Adult/Family racing is moving! A number of members have asked that this popular racing series be moved to the weekend, to allow great participation. Therefore, we will race on Saturday afternoons - Skippers Meeting will be at 1 PM. You will be able to reserve a boat on the white board Saturday mornings, first come first served! We will be looking for one or two adults each Saturday who can help run races (expertise welcome, but not required, as we will also have two instructors on hand) - please let me know if you are interested.
The July Bang and Go Back and the July party will take place on Saturday, July 30th. The August Bang and Go Back and the Fleet De-Commissioning are scheduled for Friday, August 19th. The August party will take place on Saturday, August 20th, and the CYC Annual Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 21st. The Schedules page of the CYC website will have the most up-to-date information on the season's events throughout the summer.
This year's Head Instructor Ellis Lehner, Second Instructor Darya Blout, and Third Instructors Paul Frazel, Rachel Schenck and Tom Hulley are eagerly awaiting the start of classes on June 27th. Again this year, we expect several A Groupers to help out as Junior Instructors at peak times, a continuation of a fine tradition and a great way for them to hone their teaching skills.
Last summer we saw somewhat reduced demand for Thursday evening Ladies' Sailing. Please let me know if you'd like to see this program continue. On any Thursday where we have at least five interested sailors, instruction will be available. Please sign up at the Boutique on a first-come/first-served basis. The weekly fee remains at $20, and must be paid prior to each class.
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS: CYC WORK WEEKEND IS JUNE 18-19
We hope you will join us to help get the CYC ship-shape for the upcoming season. It is a lot of fun for everyone! We will serve lunch on Saturday for all volunteers. Please meet us at the Clubhouse at 8:30AM on Saturday, June 18th and, if needed, at 9 AM on Sunday, June 19th. We should be done by noon on Sunday at the latest, and perhaps as early as late Saturday afternoon, with good weather and a good turnout. There is a 7 PM Friday night M/V Cuttyhunk ferry and a 9 AM ferry on Saturday morning, with return service at 4 PM on Saturday and at noon and 5 PM on Sunday.
If you can join us, please RSVP via the Contact Us page on the CYC website or on Facebook. We would be happy to provide a community service letter to any high school or college-aged student who volunteers during Work Weekend. These letters can be a helpful addition to your activities resume. Interested students should let us know that you would like to receive a letter when you arrive to volunteer.
EVER WONDER WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE COMMODORE OF THE WEEK? GIVE IT A TRY!
The CYC Commodore of the Week program helps to assure the smooth sailing of the program throughout the season by providing adult support to the instructors during sailing program hours. We hope you will consider volunteering to be Commodore of the Week for one week during the season. For a complete description of the Commodore of the Week duties and/or to sign up, please email Bill Tabor via the Contact Us page.
PLEASE HELP US ENSURE SAFETY AND REDUCE NOISE.........
When dropping off and picking up your children, and in an effort to reduce classroom noise, please stand on the roadside closer to the dock and away from the clubhouse until the instructors have finished the lesson.
We ask that you have your children walk to class so that golf cart traffic is minimized for safety and noise reasons. Lastly, please have your child bring their own life preserver to class and wear closed-toe, water-appropriate shoes. EVERYONE (children and adults) must wear a life preserver at all times on CYC docks, floats, and boats. Also, don't forget the sunscreen!
CYC BOUTIQUE READIES FOR THE SUMMER SEASON WITH SOME EXCITING NEW STYLES
Emily Anderson will be heading up the CYC Boutique and is working on some new and exciting Summer fashion ideas to add to your collection of CYC branded apparel and accessories.
This year's Summer Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8:30 - 10AM and Sunday 10:30 - noon and during the CYC July and August Parties! Your continued support of the CYC Boutique helps us greatly to defray program and operating costs so that we are able to keep class fees affordable for Cuttyhunk families. The CYC is looking for volunteers to help run the Boutique in July and August so please contact Emily via the Contact Us page. if you can help. Thank you!
PLEASE RETURN YOUR AWARDS!
A reminder to all award winners from last year to please have your name
engraved on your trophy and return it to the CYC Clubhouse by July 15th
at the latest. As its name implies, the keeper plate you received with the trophy is yours to keep!
THE CYC PHOTO CONTEST
Over the years, members have been extremely generous sharing their photos with the CYC. In 2008 we introduced a photo contest and many members have submitted some truly wonderful images. One of last year's winning shots is shown here, and you can view other entries on the CYC website. Again this year, we encourage you to email your very best, timely CYC digital photos on land or sea (photo must be CYC related). Contest rules will be posted in the Photos section of CYC website. A panel of judges will be announced, made up of instructors and members. If you would like to be a judge, please let us know via the Contact Us page on the CYC website. We will award CYC embroidered caps to one winner in July and one in August.
HERE ARE SOME PHOTOS FROM LAST YEAR TO GET US IN THE MOOD FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON!
In closing, I would like to thank the CYC Officers, Governors, Instructors and myriad of CYC volunteers who have worked throughout the winter to ready the Club for the 2011 Season.
See you all this Summer and thanks for your continued support of the CYC!
All the best, David L. Frothingham Commodore Cuttyhunk Yacht Club
