Dear CYC Friends,
Springtime greetings! We are looking forward to another fun season of sailing at the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club. As a volunteer-managed organization, CYC could not survive without both the physical and financial support of the membership. To make it all happen, we need your help. The first opportunity for volunteers is during Work Weekend on June 19th and 20th (see below for details).
Thanks to those of you who have already joined CYC for 2010. If you have not already done so, please keep in mind that class space is available on a first-come/first-served basis, and that July classes often are full before the season starts. Also, per-week sailing class fees for each child registered will increase from $60 to $70 as of June 1, and to $80 for sailing class registrations received after the season starts on June 28. June 1 is the deadline for inclusion in this year's CYC Directory. Please have mercy on your CYC management volunteers for whom the months of May and June are an extremely busy time by taking the initiative to sign up before the deadline. This gives us time to compile the Directory and allows us to focus on preparing the boats and motors and organizing the events which occur during the season.
Our eight-week 2010 season begins on Monday, June 28nd and ends Friday August 20th. The class schedule will remain the same as last year and is as follows:
C Group: 9-11 AM, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday B Group: 9-11 AM, Monday and Thursday; 1-4 PM Tuesday A Group: 1- 4 PM, Monday, Thursday and Friday
Wednesday afternoon is Adult/Family racing (2:00 PM Skippers Meeting).
The July Bang and Go Back and the July party will take place on Saturday, July 25. The August Bang and Go Back and the Fleet De-Commissioning are scheduled for Friday, August 20th. The August party will take place on Saturday, August 21st, and the CYC Annual Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 22nd. The Schedules page of the CYC website will have the most up-to-date information on the season's events throughout the summer.
This year's Head Instructor Ellis Lehner, Second Instructor Lucy Garfield, and Third Instructors Darya Blout, Paul Frazel, and Rachel Schenck are eagerly awaiting the start of classes on June 28th. Again this year, we expect several A Groupers to help out as Junior Instructors at peak times, a continuation of a fine tradition and a great way for them to hone their teaching skills.
The CYC will continue the very popular family-friendly Wednesday afternoon race series which has been a big success each year. We will also host Menauhant Yacht Club for a mini regatta with our A Group sailors on Thursday, July 15 (raindate is Monday, July 19). We hope you'll join us to watch the races!
Thursday evening Ladies' Sailing will continue this year as well. Sign up at the Boutique on a first-come/first-served basis. The weekly fee remains at $20, and must be paid prior to each class.
High school racing will take place again this year on Sunday afternoons. See below for more details.
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS: CYC WORK WEEKEND IS JUNE 19-20
We hope you will join us to help get the CYC ship-shape for the upcoming season. It is a lot of fun for everyone! We will serve lunch on Saturday for all volunteers. Please meet us at the Clubhouse at 8:30AM on Saturday, June 19th and, if needed, at 9 AM on Sunday, June 20th. We should be done by noon on Sunday at the latest, and perhaps as early as late Saturday afternoon, with good weather and a good turnout. There is a 7 PM Friday night M/V Cuttyhunk ferry and a 9 AM ferry on Saturday morning, with return service at 4 PM on Saturday and at noon and 5 PM on Sunday.
If you can join us, please RSVP via the Contact Us page on the CYC website or on Facebook. Also, we are looking for a volunteer to coordinate the lunch. Please let us know if you are willing to help with the meal.
We would be happy to provide a community service letter to any high school or college-aged student who volunteers during Work Weekend. These letters can be a helpful addition to your activities resume. Interested students should let us know that you would like to receive a letter when you arrive to volunteer.
EVER WONDER WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE COMMODORE OF THE WEEK? GIVE IT A TRY!
The CYC Commodore of the Week program helps to assure the smooth sailing of the program throughout the season by providing adult support to the instructors during sailing program hours. We hope you will consider volunteering to be Commodore of the Week for one week during the season. For a complete description of the Commodore of the Week duties and/or to sign up, please email Bill Tabor at [to reduce spam, Bill's contact info is omitted in this version of the Newsletter posted online -- please use the Contact Us page, explaining that the message is for Bill. Thank you!].
PLEASE HELP US ENSURE SAFETY AND REDUCE NOISE.........
When dropping off and picking up your children, and in an effort to reduce classroom noise, please stand on the roadside closer to the dock and away from the clubhouse until the instructors have finished the lesson.
We ask that you have your children walk to class so that golf cart traffic is minimized for safety and noise reasons. Lastly, please have your child bring their own life preserver to class and wear closed-toe, water-appropriate shoes. EVERYONE (children and adults) must wear a life preserver at all times on CYC docks, floats, and boats. Also, don't forget the sunscreen!
SUNDAY AFTERNOON TEEN RACING RETURNS!
Sunday afternoon racing will be open to all teens who are members of CYC and have at least two years of A-group instruction. Skipper's meetings will start at CYC at 12:30 on Sundays with racing to follow. Plans include weekly prizes and potluck dinners and/or music making following the races.
NEEDED- Adult/Accomplished sailor(s) to serve as race master(s). Nancy Wilder will handle the dry land details. Pay is terrible (i.e. probably nothing), but fun is guaranteed! Interested?- Contact Nancy Wilder at [to reduce spam, Nancy's contact info is omitted in this version of the Newsletter posted online -- please use the Contact Us page, explaining that the message is for Nancy. Thank you!].

PLEASE RETURN YOUR AWARDS!
A reminder to all award winners from last year to please have your name
engraved on your trophy and return it to the CYC Clubhouse by July 15th
at the latest. As its name implies, the keeper plate you received with the trophy is yours to keep!
THE CYC PHOTO CONTEST
Over the years, members have been extremely generous sharing their photos with the CYC. In 2008 we introduced a photo contest and many members have submitted some truly wonderful images. One of last year's winning shots is shown here, and you can view other entries on the CYC website. Again this year, we encourage you to email your very best, timely CYC digital photos on land or sea (photo must be CYC related). Contest rules will be posted in the Photos section of CYC website. A panel of judges will be announced, made up of instructors and members. If you would like to be a judge, please let us know via the Contact Us page on the CYC website. We will award CYC embroidered caps to one winner in July and one in August.
