Subject: Cuttyhunk Yacht Club 2009 Spring Newsletter

Dear CYC Friends,

Springtime greetings! We are looking forward to another fun season of sailing at the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club. As a volunteer-managed organization, CYC could not survive without both the physical and financial support of the membership. To make it all happen, we need your help. The first opportunity for volunteers is during Work Weekend on June 13th and 14th (see below for details).

Thanks to the 100+ CYC member families who have already renewed using the new Internet-based registration option. It's easy! If you have not yet joined for 2009, please keep in mind that class space is available on a first-come/first-served basis, and that July classes often are full before the season starts. Also, per-week sailing class fees will increase from $60 to $70 as of June 1. This is also the deadline for inclusion in this year's CYC Directory. For more information on how to register, please see below.

Our nine week 2009 season begins on Monday, June 22nd and ends Friday August 21st. The class schedule with remain the same as last year and is as follows:

C Group: 9-11 AM, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
B Group: 9-11 AM, Monday and Thursday; 1-4 PM Tuesday
A Group: 1- 4 PM, Monday, Thursday and Friday

Wednesday afternoon is Adult/Family racing (2:00 PM Skippers Meeting).

The July Bang and Go Back and the July party will take place on Saturday, July 25. The August Bang and Go Back and the Fleet De-Commissioning are scheduled for August 21. The August party will take place on Saturday, August 22, and the CYC Annual Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 23. The Schedules page of the CYC website will have the most up-to-date information on the season's events throughout the summer.

This year's Head Instructor Ellis Lehner, Second Instructor Beau Monast, and Third Instructors Lucy Garfield, Katie Lovell, and Doug Newkirk are eagerly awaiting the start of classes on June 22. Again this year, we expect several A Groupers to help out as Junior Instructors at peak times, a continuation of a fine tradition and a great way for them to hone their teaching skills.

The CYC will continue the very popular family-friendly Wednesday afternoon race series which was a big success last year. We are also talking with a few Yacht Clubs of similar spirit about scheduling mini regattas again in July and August, and we will keep you posted.

Last year's introduction of Thursday evening Ladies' Sailing proved to be immensely popular, and we will continue this program again this year. Sign up at the Boutique on a first-come/first-served basis. The weekly fee remains at $20, and must be paid prior to each class.

We are pleased to announce a new opportunity for high schoolers to engage in their own spirited competition on Sunday afternoons. See below for more details.

On a very sad note, we mourn the very recent passing of two long-time CYC members, Ben Walker and Vi Porter. Ben served both as the Director of Inter-Club Racing and as a former CYC Governor. Please join us in keeping their families in your thoughts and prayers.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS! THE CYC WORK WEEKEND IS JUNE 13-14th

ImagePlease make an effort to help us get the CYC ship shape for the Summer season. It is a lot of fun for everyone! We will serve lunch on Saturday for all volunteers. We will meet at the Clubhouse at 8:30 AM on Saturday June 13th and at 9:00 AM Sunday June 14th. We should be done by noon on Sunday at the latest and maybe Saturday late PM with a good turnout and good weather. There is a 7 PM Friday night MV Cuttyhunk Ferry and a 9 AM ferry Saturday morning, with return service on Sunday at 4 PM.

If you can join us, please RSVP via the Contact Us page on the CYC website. Also, we are looking for a volunteer to coordinate lunch. Please let us know if you are willing to help with the meal.

We would be happy to provide a community service letter to any high school or college-aged student who volunteers during Work Weekend. These letters can be a helpful addition to your activities resume! Interested students should let us know that you would like to receive a letter when you arrive to volunteer.

MEMBERSHIP AND CLASS REGISTRATION REMINDER

ImageFrom David L. Frothingham, Vice Commodore and Treasurer:

To ensure that your family is listed in the 2009 Directory, please join CYC and pay your dues before June 1. Membership dues remain unchanged at $50 per year. We invite those aged 21-30 to join as Associate Members at the reduced annual dues rate of $20. Registration fees also remain unchanged from last year at $60 per child per week, if paid before June 1. After June 1, fees increase to $70 per child per week. The CYC has a one week minimum for sailing classes and class sizes are limited, so please register as soon as possible. On-site registration is subject to availability and is not guaranteed.

If you have not yet heard, you can now join CYC, register your children for sailing classes, and make a donation to CYC on the web! This new approach has also enabled CYC to accept credit cards for payment of dues, registration and contributions. We understand that some of our members may not be comfortable using the electronic payment approach. If you are among them, it is possible to register on the web and mail your check to CYC Treasurer, David L. Frothingham, 10 Craig Drive, Merrimack NH 03054. One of the information buttons on the renewal page also shows this address.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS NEW ELECTRONIC MEMBERSHIP AND SAILING REGISTRATION APPROACH MEANS THAT CYC HAS MAILED PAPER FORMS ONLY TO THOSE FEW CYC MEMBERS WHO DO NOT HAVE READY ACCESS TO EMAIL.

The CYC and our insurance company both require that each member family agree to the waiver, a copy of which is available on the registration website, and that each child in the sailing program have a completed and signed medical consent form on file with CYC prior to attending class. This is a firm condition of member participation.

In years past, we have made last minute phone calls to procrastinating members who have not sent in their dues by the deadline but we will not be doing this in 2009 as this process is time consuming for our already-busy volunteers and inevitably causes a delay in the publication. Stephen Garfield, our publisher, wants to have the 2009 CYC directories available for distribution by the 4th of July weekend, so please take the initiative to sign up. Thank you!

More than 60% of our members have graciously joined each year without enrolling a student, and have thereby provided crucial support for the program. Collectively these memberships allow us to remain open each season. We do not assume that you will join every year, and are truly grateful when you do.

EVER WONDER WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE COMMODORE OF THE WEEK? GIVE IT A TRY!

ImageThe CYC Commodore of the Week program helps to assure the smooth sailing of the program throughout the season by providing adult support to the instructors during sailing program hours. We hope you will consider volunteering to be Commodore of the Week for one week during the season. For a complete description of the Commodore of the Week duties and/or to sign up, please contact Bill Tabor through the Contact Us page.

A WORD ABOUT SAFETY AND NOISE..........

ImageWhen dropping off and picking up your children, and in an effort to reduce classroom noise, please stand on the roadside closer to the dock and away from the clubhouse until the instructors have finished the lesson.

We ask that you have your children walk to class so that golf cart traffic is minimized for safety and noise reasons.

Lastly, please have your child bring their own life preserver to class and wear closed-toe, water-appropriate shoes. EVERYONE (children and adults) must wear a life preserver at all times on CYC docks, floats, and boats. Also, don't forget the sunscreen!

NEW THIS SEASON! SUNDAY AFTERNOON TEEN RACING

ImageStarting July 5, Sunday afternoon racing will be open to all teens who are members of CYC and have at least two years of A-group instruction. Skipper's meetings will start at CYC at 12:30 on Sundays with racing to follow. Plans include weekly prizes and potluck dinners and/or music making following the races.

NEEDED- Adult/Accomplished sailor(s) to serve as race master(s). Nancy Wilder will handle the dry land details. Pay is terrible (i.e. probably nothing), but fun is guaranteed! Interested?- Contact Nancy Wilder through the Contact Us page or on Island at Wilder House at Four Corners after June21.

CYC BOUTIQUE READIES FOR THE SUMMER SEASON WITH SOME NEW EXCITING STYLES

ImageCathy Broderick will be heading up the CYC Boutique and is working on some new and exciting Summer fashion ideas to add to your collection of CYC branded apparel and accessories.

A NOTE ABOUT AWARDS:

A reminder to all award winners from last year to please have your name engraved on your trophy and return it to the CYC Clubhouse by July 15th at the latest.

If you received a certificate at last year's award ceremony entitling you to a keeper plate and have not already requested a plate from us, please contact Alison Granger through the Contact Us page. The keeper plates, which were out of stock last year, have been ordered and will be available shortly.
