If the Bang and Go Back is cancelled due to weather, please arrive at the CYC at 11 AM for fleet de-commissioning

Saturday, August 21: CYC August Awards Party, 5 PM on the grounds of Winter House.....Please join us in thanking Oriel and Piero for their continued generosity in offering their property again as the venue for the party!

Please bring an hors d'oeuvres or cake for the kids (with cake knife, please!). Beverages will be provided. The CYC Boutique will be open for last-chance purchases of CYC apparel.

Volunteers and golf carts/trucks are needed for set-up (and take-down after the party). Please meet at the CYC at 2 PM if you can help.

All members are welcome

THE 2010 CYC DIRECTORIES HAVE ARRIVED

If you are on Cuttyhunk, please stop by the CYC Boutique to pick up your 2010 Directory.  We will also plan to distribute them to those members who attend the August party.  While we are attempting to keep postage costs down, any directories which have not been picked up will be mailed to your home address at the end of the season.

PLEASE VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE CYC PHOTO STARTING AUGUST 18th

With an upcoming photo submission deadline of Saturday, August 14th, please email any additional photo submissions to Hal Granger. A panel of judges will select 10 finalist photos for July and another 10 for August. (If you would like to volunteer to be a judge, contact us via the Web site before Saturday.)

Starting Wednesday, August 18th, we invite CYC members to vote for their favorite July photo and also their favorite August photo.
Voting will be online via a link on the home page www.cuttyhunkyachtclub.org.  You will be able to see a running tally of votes as they are cast. The proud July and August winners will be awarded an embroidered CYC cap at the August party. Good luck!

Thanks to all for submitting your photos!

Boutique Manager Cathy Broderick and her team of enthusiastic volunteers will be at the August party with our complete inventory, including the ever-popular micro-fleece which is perfect for those cool August nights.

Proceeds from Boutique sales help greatly to defray program costs while keeping class fees affordable for Cuttyhunk families.

Thanks for your support of the CYC Boutique!

PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE AUGUST BANG AND GO BACK!

While the wind conditions for the July Bang and Go Back did not initially look promising and required the towing of some of the boats out to the outer harbor so they could be there in time for the start (thanks for the tow, Paul Lehner!), we were able to hold a fun race.  Congratulations to Third Instructor Paul Frazel, who was the overall winner.  He's shown below, relaxing after his victory!

REGATTA FUN!

CYCracers20100726Hinson 3CYC A Groupers hosted Menauhant Yacht Club from East Falmouth on July 26.  The weather was great for sailing, and it was a well-matched and fun competition.  At the conclusion of the races, Cuttyhunk had edged out Menauhant by a score of 41-43.  Congratulations to all sailors for their enthusiasm and accomplishments!

FLORA HALL LOVELL

BrysonFloraHallCup080824CherylLovell

Long-time CYC member, Flora Hall Lovell, shown here with her grandson, Bryson Lovell, after he won the Leila Hall Cup for A Group sportsmanship back in 2008,  passed away peacefully on the evening of August 6, 2010 at Falmouth Hospital on Cape Cod.  Please join us in extending our condolences to Jim, Becky, Bruce, Charlie, Matt and Peggy, their spouses, Flora's grand- and great-grandchildren, and all other members of Flora's family.

THANK YOU!

In closing, this will be my last newsletter to you, our loyal membership, as my two years as Commodore are complete. As you know, the CYC is an all volunteer organization which, while maintaining its fine tradition of teaching sailing to children between six and sixteen, benefits from having new leadership every two years. I hope you will join me in welcoming David Frothingham as your new Commodore for the next two years, along with Cathy Broderick as Vice-Commodore, and Marc Buckley as Rear Commodore.

Special thanks to Steve Garfield for his many, many years of volunteer service to CYC as Governor, Commodore, and most recently publisher of the much-sought-after CYC Directory, as he will be passing the baton at the end of this season.RudMasonDock20100711HCG 3

I would also like to recognize Rud Mason and Zac Devoe for their work to keep the dock safe by replacing the boards on the dock (see pic above); this follows Rud''s building and installation of the new ramps last year.  Thanks to Cathy Broderick, CYC's boutique manager and mastermind of this year's most popular item, the CYC lax pinnie. W
yatt, Seth, and Angus Garfield, along with Chris Hart, were absolutely key in ensuring that the docks and floats were ready for the season after some very tough winter storms, while Bill Garfield has helped to ensure that the dock pilings are well cared for.  Wyatt, along with Chris Hart, also solved some challenging and time-consuming issues which we had with the motors before the season started in June.   We are very grateful for their help.  Nancy Wilder and Emily Anderson provided much-appreciated on-island backup throughout the season when Vice Commodore David, Boutique Manager Cathy, and I were unable to be on Cuttyhunk.
David and Treasurer Marc Buckley (and their spouses!) played a crucial role in keeping the financial operations humming along throughout the year.  Thanks also goes to Bill Tabor, who coordinated the Commodores of the Week and to those who graciously volunteered to be a Commodore of the Week.  We are grateful to CYC Clerk, Brian Broderick for providing ongoing expert guidance on non-profit governance. Hal Granger saw to it that the CYC website has been kept up to date throughout the year for your viewing pleasure, has created and managed the photo contest, and has worked hard to make our membership and registration process go as smoothly as possible.   I am grateful to him for his cheerful support and for my daily cup of morning coffee as well!  We also thank the Porter/Dennison families and Oriel and Piero for their willingness to provide beautiful venues for the July and August parties.  And to all of you volunteers who faithfully showed up for work weekends, regattas, and decommissionings, and who volunteered in the Boutique, we could not have run the CYC without you!

Finally, thanks to Ellis, Lucy, Darya, Paul and Rachel for a job well done, and we wish them each success during the upcoming academic year.

It has been a true pleasure to serve the CYC.  All the best for the rest of 2010.  We look forward to seeing everyone again next summer.

Cordially,

Alison Granger
